Automotive applications

Tooling

MetalFab technology is being utilised in the automotive sector to manufacture tools and dies for both plastic metal injection moulding and pressure die casting. The design freedom that is possible with AM allows for the production of tools and inserts with advanced internal cooling structures such as conformal channels, heat sinking and more, as well as opportunities for material cost and weight savings. These advanced designs, when produced using tool steel materials which can be hardened in a conventional manner, allow for improvements to be realised in terms of casting/moulding cycle time, increased tool life and better part quality.

Development parts

The unique capabilities of metal 3d printing enables new designs, development parts or bespoke one-off components to be manufactured effectively and with confidence, cutting lead times and reducing design cycles in fast-paced development environments.  This is particularly relevant in the motorsport sector where the MetalFab technology is proven to deliver for fast development cycles from CAD to wind tunnel or the track.  A range of applications have been unlocked from structural parts such as roll hoop structures and suspension parts through to high iteration wind-tunnel test parts.

Series production

Our modular and automated metal additive manufacturing technology is well suited to producing series production runs of components and tools in the automotive sector.  MetalFab technology is enabling manufacturers to move beyond prototyping into stable, repeatable manufacturing with OEMs and Tier suppliers producing  components such as brackets, housings, cooling systems, and mass-customized parts, in batches ranging from low-volume series to several thousand units.   MetalFab enables higher utilization rates, continuous production, and consistent quality, supporting the industrialization of additive manufacturing in automotive.

What our customers say – Volkswagen

“Because of the integrated automatic powder extraction we have less manual effort, and this is a very important step forward for industrial processes”

“The MetalFab 420K gives us the productivity, precision, and reliability we need to move quickly from design iteration to flight hardware. Additive Industries has been a strong partner throughout the beta program, and this next step reflects our confidence in the system’s readiness for production.”
