Find out more about the Additive Industries’ design approach of the gas flow configuration of the MetalFAB1 with the aid of computational fluid dynamics

Inert gas flow is a crucial element of the LPBF process and achieving the desired part quality and consistency across the build plate. The challenge of achieving optimal flow scales with the LPBF system’s chamber size, number of lasers and the applied laser power, all of which influence the rate with which process emissions are produced. In this paper we will explore the Additive Industries design approach of the gas flow sub system with the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics and the influence of this optimal gas flow configuration, on part quality and consistency across the full 420 x 420 x 400 [mm] build area of the MetalFAB1
