Yesterday, on February 22nd 2021, our Technology Partner F1 Team Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN launched its 2021 contender, the C41. The ceremony took place at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, Poland.

We are proud to announce, that the new C41 will accelerate this year with 304 metal parts printed on MetalFAB1! This amount has more than doubled compared to the amount of parts produced last year for C39 (143 parts).
The 304 parts were produced using the following materials:
  • 22% in Ti64Gd23
  • 36% in Scalmalloy
  • 40% in AlSi10Mg
  • 2% in Stainless Steel

The total combined weight of these metal parts, produced on MetalFAB1 system, accounts for approx. 14860g, a relatively small increase over last year’s 13140g, when considering the large increase in number of parts.

The cost saving aspect, where savings on some of the parts has achieved about 90% reduction in price compared to the equivalent machined parts, is also a major benefit for the Sauber Motorsport AG. The great cost saving comes not only from the lighter metal parts, higher productivity but also from the fact that they have direct access to MetalFAB1 machines. Technical Director, Jan Monchaux, commented “By having the MetalFAB1 systems inhouse, and not outsourcing externally, it helps us to achieve an important element of the cost cap.”

Sauber entered into the collaboration with Additive Industries with the objective of setting up a metal 3D printing competence center within three years. “The initial plan was to get two of these machines installed within three years”, says Christoph Hansen, Director of Technology and Innovation at Sauber Engineering “We are now entering year four and we already have four machines operating.” Read the whole article “Racing with Sauber into the future of additive production” on 3dpbm.com
