Orthopaedic surgeons have been using patient-specific surgical guides in hip, knee, shoulder and osteotomy procedures (bone realignment or cutting). Essentially the same idea as in dental, these guides help prevent errors in surgery. Fixated, the guide is unique to that patient and that procedure. Drill guides are placed at precisely the right angle and the right location. An additional advantage for many surgeries is that guides can help speed up surgical procedures as well. In orthopaedics drill guides and surgical guides are often made in titanium.
