Heat exchangers are present in many millions of devices and plants worldwide. Long made by hand through welding, heat exchangers need to excel at their task of optimizing heat transfer. The limitations of previous manufacturing technologies lead to high cost and complex manufacturing procedures. At the same time, the geometries of these exchangers were quite simple. Metal 3D printing changed the design and production of heat exchangers. But, why are people turning to metal 3D printing for heat exchangers and what can it do?
Want to receive more information about 3D heat exchangers in the aerospace industry?
Just as in the aerospace industry, heat exchangers are redesigned and 3D printed so that they have the same performance but smaller and lighter. This reduces the overall weight of the aircraft, device or saves space in a plant.
Using metal 3D printing, designs can be optimized for better thermal management. Finite element analysis, conjugate heat transfer or other methods, lead engineers to new and complex shapes. These new forms can now be produced using metal 3D printing. Increased design freedom means that science, analysis and simulation guides us to entirely new high-performance heat exchangers with better thermal management.
It is one thing to discover a new form but another to be able to manufacture this form. The MetalFAB1 can print consistently and with high quality complex, unique optimized metal shapes with optimal heat transfer.
