Internship or Work Student: Development of Digital Twin of MetalFAB AM system

Additive Industries

Additive Industries is accelerating industrial additive manufacturing by offering a modular 3D printing system and seamlessly integrated information platform to high-end and demanding industrial markets. With substantially improved reproducibility, productivity, and flexibility, Additive Industries redefines the business case for additive manufacturing applications in aerospace, energy, automotive, and high-tech equipment. 

The 3d printers are approximately 3x3x8 meters in volume and work with multiple high power lasers melting metal powder layer by layer.

Additive Industries is the only supplier of these industrial metal 3d printers with a high degree of automation for powder handling as well build handling. We support:

  • multiple build cores enabling minimal build to build overhead
  • automated powder loading and unloading (operator has no contact with powder)
  • internal powder recycling
  • dynamic laser assignment for minimal build times
  • automated handling of build plates

Assignment

With so many processes working in parallel inside the system and the system outside mostly consisting of covers preventing to actually see what is happening inside the system, it is hard to explain to customers the benefits of the system and how it all works. Developing a Digital Twin would solve that issue and will have many more benefits:

  • ability to develop (interactive) training to operators and service engineers
  • when connected to real time data of a system: visualizing the system status on any laptop where the system itself may be situated in the USA or India.
  • Developing a virtual reality to make a guided tour through the system
  • Interactive animations for exhibitions, shows and website
  • Etc

With all these opportunities, Additive Industries has created an initial version of a Digital Twin in the application “Blender”. We would like to extend this initial version with new functionality. The purpose is to make (most) of the developed applications as interactive games where the user can operate the camera or system.

We are also open to any suggestions to make these applications more attractive or exceptional! Since we have multiple use cases, we are open to discuss the correct scope of an assignment (which functionality to develop) to meet the interest and timeline of students.
